That AI systems possess human-like qualities such as goals, emotions, beliefs, or common sense.
Let’s be clear: They don’t. And understanding this distinction is critical for anyone leveraging AI in business, product, or transformation initiatives.
AI Doesn’t Have Goals—It Has Programmed Objectives
AI systems don’t “want” to achieve anything. What looks like goal-directed behavior is simply the execution of algorithms optimized around mathematical functions—often defined by humans.
- A self-driving car isn’t trying to keep you safe.
- A trading bot isn’t striving to grow your portfolio.
- A recommendation engine isn’t hoping you’ll click.
They’re all executing code to minimize loss functions or maximize probabilities.
